As a lifter and athlete, I look up to Luke Hopkins and respect his extraordinary accomplishments: Bodybuilding champion, powerlifting winner, and successful business owner, to name just a few. But getting to know him beyond an Instagram post was what really thrilled me. My overarching goal with Capital Compassion is to highlight young leaders and learn about their unique visions of philanthropy, and even before I met him, I knew Luke would have a lot to say on the subject. I always tune into his content on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube accounts, but I was curious to see if his online personality would translate to my podcast, and he complimented my enthusiasm with great wisdom and fascinating stories.
I particularly enjoyed hearing Luke talk about finding light in our dark world, in spite of the struggles we all face. He talked about his father’s accident and the trauma that he still carries from that experience. What was amazing, though, was his reflection on the way that his neighbors stepped up for his family during that hard time. A neuropsychology major, Luke is a proponent of the yellow car effect, believing that we are consumed by the things we focus on. His perspective on mental health truly made me think about my own negative thoughts and how I can rewire my brain to align with my goals.
Luke emphasized the necessity to be authentic because that is the only way to build genuine connections. Although he makes a living off of social media, which is often seen as a venue of inauthenticity, the way he advocates for real-world issues is the epitome of Capital Compassion. Additionally, Luke inspired me to upload my podcasts unedited because my listeners deserve an authentic and raw listen. Luke’s clout is growing, but he remains the same guy as always, and it was a pleasure to chat with and learn from him. Since our interview, I’ve continued to ponder on the power of our brains, especially in regards to Luke’s belief that we can turn “valleys into peaks” solely from mindset.
